ADHD

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common and pervasive childhood neurodevelopmental disabilities. Individuals who present with ADHD symptoms in childhood continue to manifest the symptomatic behaviors in adulthood. The symptomatic characteristics of ADHD, including inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, or a combination of the three. These symptoms present significant impairment and challenges to the affected individual in the various functional related domains, including on-task and self-regulatory behaviors, information processing, attention span, cognition, concentration and memory, and transitions between tasks. Characteristically, individuals with ADHD may exhibit boredom or absentmindedness, and inability complete self-directed tasks; deficit in executive function—memory deficit, forgetfulness, disinhibition—fidgetiness, and procrastination; lack in self-regulation, planning, management, and organizational skills, which when undiagnosed and untreated, may lead to impairment in occupational, academic, and social function.

Notably, individuals who present with ADHD are susceptible to other comorbid disorders including behavioral and learning disorders; externalizing behavior –oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), conduct disorder (CD), and internalizing behaviors—anxiety and depression.
